Vivian Magariño-Gómez, LCMHCA, ATR-P, NBCT
As a result of 12 years of experience in community mental health and 16 years in public education, I have worked in a wide variety of settings ranging from inpatient treatment centers, school-based programs, to outpatient and outreach services. I have served children, adolescents, adults, and their families with issues of trauma, abuse, addiction, ADHD, PTSD, gang involvement, and emerging sexuality issues. As an educator, I created an integrated, trauma-informed, arts curriculum to strengthen emotional intelligence, coping skills, and community engagement. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology from University of South Florida and a master’s degree In Transpersonal Psychology-Art Therapy from Naropa University, Boulder, CO. I have been working with children and families for years and utilize the connection between education and art therapy to the benefits of my clients. In short, I’m convinced art is key to accessing the whole person. |
What's the difference between art therapy and art education?
In art therapy, artistic skill is not required! Art therapy is a specialty of mental health counseling and is a confidential setting. It relies on art media and artmaking rather than words and is suitable for children and adults. Children may struggle to identify and process feelings. The art serves as a manipulative to illustrate and enact their internal life. As adults, we tend to overthink as a mean of solving problems and hesitate to directly experience feelings. The art does it for us. Art allows us to release and house our turmoil then interact with those feeling from a comfortable distance.
Art education teaches art skills, techniques, exploration, and fosters creativity.
